Bob:    what game do you consider the greatest upset in DE HS football history to be?

This was sent in by one of our members to me...so...here goes!

Many years ago we're, (Wilmington High School) was playing Howard High at the old Wilmington Ball Park in 1948, I was a Soph. and we were leading the Wildcats 20 to 0 going into the 4th quarter...low and behold, they scored 3 TD's and 3 extra points to beat us by 1 point, 21 to 20...They had Big Gator Lewis and Little Randy Ransom and beat the crap out of us...the next year might have been a bigger upset, same stage, Wilmington Ball Park and Howard was suppose to KILL us...well we won, 41 to 0...so what comes around, goes around. I'm sure you guys have some better and bigger upsets, lets hear (or read) them,

Heres one for you,,,, Newark HS Yellowjackets verses Elkton Hs, Md., on open day AT Newark under thier brand new Stadium lights,(circa 1953 season). Newark was favored to beat lowly Elkton by 5 touchdowns,,,was in all the local Delware papers,,,, Elkton didn't stand a chance ,,after all Elkton had never beaten Newark and Newark ALWAYS scheduled Elkton as an opening game for an easy win for their fans to get their season off to a winning start... Well,, they hadn't accounted for a couple of transfers that came into Elkton that particular season,,, one was Carl Dennis Campbell a 285lb 6'6'' both ways tackle and the other a tall 6'3" gluefingered right end and line backer, who had transferred to the Golden Elks school that year, by the name of Stewart ..Stewart was on the Newark undefeated 1951 Newark HS State Champion ship team the year before.
Long story short the upset of the decade in Delware HS Football,,, Elkton HS 13,,, Newark HS Yellowjackets ,,6. Oh by the by,, both touchdowns and the extra point were scored by that tall right end, punter, linebacker,, Frank Stewart,,,, not bragging but it's the truth,,, you see other parts of the state have great teams too....... however,, so do Maryland team just across the line about a mile and ahalf... am I smiling,,, YES,, Bob I'm am smiling,,,thought your fans would like to know... Blessings Pastor Stewart

Hi Frank,

Great story and a real BIG upset too! No, I don't believe your bragging and anyone reading it does not think your bragging believe me! Your telling it like it was...you should be Proud of your accomplishments, I am for you and myself! When our family gets together and start talking about "old times"...Grand-pop starts telling his "war" stories...I look around at the Grandsons and Son-in-laws and think, (hey, am I bragging or am I just telling them something that their Grand-pop did do) and I want them to know about it...because if I didn't tell them, who's going to tell them? Hope you and the family have a Wonderful Holiday Season, God Bless and GO NEWARK...going for Div. I State Championship tonight against Middletown, GOOD LUCK to both teams!

From one All Stater to another, Merry Christmas...Bob LaFazia
