Bob:    what game do you consider the greatest upset in DE HS football history to be?

This was sent in by one of our members to goes!

Many years ago we're, (Wilmington High School) was playing Howard High at the old Wilmington Ball Park in 1948, I was a Soph. and we were leading the Wildcats 20 to 0 going into the 4th quarter...low and behold, they scored 3 TD's and 3 extra points to beat us by 1 point, 21 to 20...They had Big Gator Lewis and Little Randy Ransom and beat the crap out of us...the next year might have been a bigger upset, same stage, Wilmington Ball Park and Howard was suppose to KILL us...well we won, 41 to what comes around, goes around. I'm sure you guys have some better and bigger upsets, lets hear (or read) them,

This is a slideshow that I have made up from years of going to Hank Vari's Get-togethers once a year! Anyone can come, you don't have to be a jock...just love sports! Lots of former players, High School, College and Pro's, coaches, High School and College...always around St. Pat's Day...last few years have been at Grotto's on Pennsylvania Ave. in Wilmington. Click this on, hope you ENJOY it...for a better view, click on FULL SCREEN and if you want to stop and read, click pause on the bottom left...

Thanx, Bob LaFazia

Bob, Congrats to you.

Bob, This is an event you should be very proud  to have initiated.  I consider myself an average layman regarding sports in the State of Delaware or anywhere for that matter. I love football and watch as many games as possible. The physical aspect of it has become more violent over the years but still enjoyable to watch none-the-less.

Back in the days of my youth ( 1940's, 50's, and 60's )  and hearing about the exploits of  the many people you have featured herein has renewed memories long forgotten. I thank you Sir for taking the time and making the effort to assist others like myself that there is more to life than the daily mundane things we take for granted. Everyone should  take a moment to reflect upon what has gone before and recall the people and events they enjoyed in their past. I guess that is why there are so many museums. Your Delaware Football Hall of Fame serves that purpose.

Some of Sallies "Greats"

Jack Strusowski, Bucky Buiano, Rocco Mumma played for Sallies back in early 1950's  I was a student there at the time and played J.V. Ball under Coach James V "Buzzy" O'Niell , O.S.F. . When I watched these guys play ball, I was in awe and thought I'd like to play as well. Never happened as I was a big dummy and quit school to join he Marines to go away and fight a war. The war ended before I got there ! - Anyhow, this is about the real players and not aout me. Strusowski, and Buiano were like the Blanchard and Davis of Notre Dame Fame. ( Mr Inside and Mr Outside)

These guys were phenominal in their ability to get things done on the gridiron. Mumma was another story. He was good too, but he was more of a bulldog type of guy for short yardage plays. . ( Rocco Mumma later went to college and became a P.H.D.) I lost track of him and often wondered what became of him . I also wondered why Strusowski and Buiano never made it to the "Pros." - They were that good !
